D'ARBY, Terence Trent

(b Darby, 15 March '62, NYC) Soul singer with remarkable gospel-trained voice, able to re- create any black style of the last 30 years. First LP Introducing The Hard Line '87 on CBS/Columbia incl. all his own songs but one, too much of a showcase as well as being overproduced, like most debuts, resulting in a bunch of forgettable juke box singles; but it reached no. 4 USA. Terence Trent D'Arby's Neither Fish Nor Flesh '89 was an inconsistent concept album, but still ambitious; Terence Trent D'Arby's Symphony Or Damn '93 and Terence Trent D'Arby's Vibrator '95 on Work had fans listening for the voice but were slipping down the charts, his ego notwithstanding. Early Works by 'The Touch With Terence Trent D'Arby' was an '83 skeleton from the closet.
