(b 17 Aug. '20 NYC; d there 11 July '85) Bass, arranger. Studied violin formally; played bass with Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Millinder; sold first arr. to Jimmie Lunceford '42. After WWII worked with Lunceford, Sy Oliver, others incl. many singers: toured Europe with Nellie Lutcher, Lena Horne. Recorded with Count Basie and Joe Williams, Frank Sinatra, Bud Powell, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims and Joe Venuti, many dozens of others; also much studio work. One of music's best-loved sidemen made one obscure LP as leader on a Coronet label: Paris '56 with quartet incl. Martial Solal.
