DAFFAN, Ted

(b Theron Eugene Daffan, 21 Sep. '12, Beauregarde, LA; d 6 Oct. '96) Honky-tonk country singer, songwriter, steel guitarist. Worked in electronics, took up steel, played in Hawaiian style; then country music with jazz flavour; joined Blue Ridge Playboys '34-5, Bar X Cowboys '36-40 in Houston. Wrote "Truck Driver's Blues', perhaps the first truck driving song, a hit for Moon Mullican and for Cliff Bruner '39, leading to contract with Columbia '39-51. Ted Daffan & His Texans had hits incl. "Worried Mind' '40, "Always Alone' '41, "Born To Lose' '43, "No Letter Today' '44, "Headin' Down The Wrong Highway' '45, "I've Got Five Dollars And It's Saturday Night' '50. Wrote most of his own hits, also "I'm A Fool To Care' (pop hit for Joe Berry '61), hundreds of others. Gold disc for "Born To Lose'. Owns publishing firm and record company in Houston.
