DeVOL, Frank

(b 20 September 1911, Moundsville WV; d 27 October 1999, Lafayette CA) Composer, arranger, conductor. Raised in Ohio; arranged and played lead alto sax for Horace Heidt late '30s, then Alvino Rey '39-40; from '43 studio work on radio, records, TV. Accompanied Nat Cole, many others at Capitol early '50s (including Cole's huge hit 'Nature Boy'); then Robert Goulet, Doris Day, Tony Bennett, Vic Damone etc on Columbia as well as his own albums of light music (often as 'Music by De Vol'). He wrote themes and soundtrack music for TV (My Three Sons series), films including The Big Knife '55, Pillow Talk '59, Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? '62, Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte and Cat Ballou '65, The Dirty Dozen '67, many more. As Frank DeVol & his Rainbow Strings he made the Hot 100 with 'La Montana (If She Could Come To You)'  '60; Lawrence Welk had a hit single with his 'Theme From My Three Sons' '61. He allegedly arranged 'The Happening' for Diana Ross & The Supremes '66.
