Worked as painter and decorator while playing in local groups '30s, formed own band The Texas Troopers '40. Signed to Brunswick '36- 40, Columbia '40-9, scored with "Pistol Packin' Mama' (sold two million '43), "Honky Tonk Blues', "Too Late To Worry, Too Blue To Cry', "Rose Of Mexico', etc for 12 gold discs '43-8. Also recorded for Decca '62-3, King '55, Dot '56, Capitol '62-4. Retired to run motel in Lufkin, Texas, nightclub in Dallas.
