DAVIES, Cyril

(b '32, Buckinghamshire, England; d 7 Jan. '64 of leukaemia) Nickname 'Squirrel'. With Alexis Korner a pioneer of British blues. Played banjo early '50s in trad, then skiffle; late '50s played harmonica with Korner, jamming with visiting black Americans; in early '60s they went electric, formed Blues Incorporated: future Rolling Stones, Cream passed through; Davies left late '62 to form own All- Stars, taking over Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages, employing Nicky Hopkins and others. After his death vocalist Long John Baldry took over most of the All-Stars. Tribute to Davies and Korner Knights Of The Blues Table '97 on Viceroy had almost everybody on it from the changing lineups of Blues Incorporated and many more.
