DAVIS, Tyrone

(b 4 May '38, Greenville MS; d 9 Feb. 2005, Oak Park IL) Sweet soul singer. Grew up in Saginaw MI; to Chicago '59, worked as valet/chauffeur for Freddie King, then in clubs; recorded for Four Brothers as 'Tyrone the Wonder Boy'. 'Can I Change My Mind' '68 no. 1 in the black chart, top five in pop; he had 41 hits in the black chart '68-88, including no. ones 'Turn Back The Hands Of Time' '70 (no. 3 pop), 'Turning Point' '75, eleven more in top ten. Chart albums were Can I Change My Mind '69, Turn Back The Hands Of Time '70, I Had It All The Time '72, Without You In My Life '73, all on Dakar; Love And Touch '76 and In The Mood '79 on Columbia, and Tyrone Davis '83 on Highrise. When the chart years are over the fans do not desert a voice they love; I'll Always Love You '91, Something's Mighty Wrong and The Best Of The Future Years '92, You Stay On My Mind '94 were all on Ichiban. Davis suffered a stroke in September 2004 and remained in a coma until he died of pneumonia.
