(b 2 Sep. '32, Richmond VA; d 2 June '90) Piano, composer. Played with Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey in '50s; from '60 led own trio; also with Sonny Rollins, Blakey again in '70s. Recorded with Blakey, Rollins, Sonny Criss, Archie Shepp; own LPs began with Davis Cup '59 on Blue Note with Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean; Abide With Me '77 (solo, trio, quartet tracks), Night Song '78 (trio), both on Denon; A Being Such As You and Uranus (both solo), Blues Walk (trio), all made Nov. '79 in Italy; 400 Years Ago Tomorrow '79 in Paris (solo), Live At Le Dreher '81 (trio with Pierre Michelot, Kenny Clarke) on French labels; also In Walked Thelonious '87 on Mapleshade, Scorpio Rising '89 0n Steeplechase, Illumination on Denon with Blakey, Jeremy Steig, Tony Williams, several others.
