ESCORTS, The

UK pop band, one of the best "second division' Merseybeat groups, formed '61. Lineup: Mike Gregory, bass; Terry Sylvester, rhythm guitar (both b '47); Pete Clark, drums; John Kinrade, guitar. Played the usual round of Liverpool and Hamburg gigs; Brian Epstein expressed interest in them, but nothing came of it; debut single, cover of Larry Williams's "Dizzy Miss Lizzy', was regional USA hit, especially in Texas, but they could not go ther to promote it. Strong songs were "Mad World', "Night Time'; "From Head To Toe' (Smokey Robinson song) featured Paul McCartney on tambourine and was covered by Elvis Costello for minor hit '82, prompted by complete Escorts compilation From The Blue Angel '82. With better luck they may have become a major force. Split '66; Sylvester joined the Swinging Blue Jeans, later the Hollies.
