(b 23 Nov. '39, Greenwood MS) Soul singer; one of the best. Played piano and sang in church from age nine; moved to Chicago '57, began recording on local labels Cobra, on C.J. '60, then One-Derful, where she had local hits "I've Got A Claim On You' and "I'll Be There'; then signed by Vee-Jay: "You're No Good' just missed top 50 late '63 (covered in UK by the Swinging Blue Jeans); biggest hit "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)' '64 was no. 10 (revived by Linda Lewis '75 for top 10 UK hit, and by Cher '90 for soundtrack of Mermaids and a no. 7 USA hit). "I Can't Hear You' and "Getting Mighty Crowded' did not reach top 50, but latter made no. 29 in UK '65. Duet hits with Jerry Butler made no. 5 ("Let It Be Me'), just missed top 40 ("Smile'); their LP Delicious Together charted '64 (no. 102). Vee-Jay folded '67; Everett went to ABC for an unsuccessful year, bouncing back on Uni for her last top 40 hit "There'll Come A Time' (no. 26 '69), also her first (no. 2) entry in national soul chart, where she had three more entries on Uni and two on Fantasy '69-71. Linda Ronstadt had a no. 1 cover of "You're No Good' '75.
