(b Victor Stanley Feldman, 7 April '34, London; d 12 May '87. L.A.) Drums, piano, vibes. Self-taught prodigy, played with Glenn Miller band at 10. To USA '55; played with Woody Herman, Lighthouse All Stars, Cannonball Adderley '60-1, with Peggy Lee '61; with Benny Goodman to USSR '62; with June Christy '65; gigged and recorded with Miles Davis '63 in L.A.; wrote "Seven Steps To Heaven', title track of Davis LP, and was offered a permanent job by Davis, but it went to Herbie Hancock because Feldman didn't want to leave his wife to go on the road. He was more and more successful in lucrative studio work, incl. albums with Steely Dan '75-80 and many others. Records in UK '48-57 on Esquire, Tempo, with John Dankworth, Stan Tracey, drummers Phil Seamen (b 28 Aug. '26, Staffordshire), Tony Crombie (b 27 Aug. '25, London), etc; larger groups '55-7 with Ronnie Scott, Tubby Hayes, others. First USA recording by a quartet on Keynote '56, not issued; then sextet Mallets A Fore Thought '57 on Mode, trio The Arrival of Victor Feldman '58, tentet Latinville '59 on Contemporary; nine more albums '60-73 on Riverside, World Pacific, etc; trio sets The Artful Dodger '77 on Concord Jazz, To Chopin With Love '83 on Palo Alto. His wife's death '84 was a terrible blow to him.
