FOUR PENNIES, The

UK pop group mid-'60s; quartet all from Lancashire: Lionel Morton, vocals, rhythm guitar; Fritz Fryer, guitar; Mike Wilsh, piano; Alan Buck, drums. Vocally strong group had no. 1 single "Juliet' '64, written by Morton, once choir boy at Blackburn Cathedral; top 20 hits followed: "I Found Out The Hard Way', version of Leadbelly's "Black Girl', both '64; "Until It's Time For You To Go' '65. Moved onto cabaret circuit, split '67. (Entirely different group called the Four Pennies still sang "Juliet' on club circuit '80s.) Morton, married to actress Julia Foster, began solo career; Buck became producer at Radio Luxembourg, then other record/show-biz jobs; Fryer had group Fritz, Mike and Mo, then became highly regarded record producer, working with Horslips, Stackridge, Clannad, Motorhead and Prelude, incl. latter's hit "After The Goldrush'.
