(b Yvonne Vaughn, 10 Nov. '49, Mount Airey NC) Country singer. Daughter of tobacco farmer, sang in church as a child. Trained as teacher, taught high school in Covina CA; sang in clubs in LA and met record prod. Stan Silver, who guided her career; they married '69 and she recorded for Ramco in Phoenix, Challenge in Hollywood. Signed to Dot '72 and with a song she wrote 'Happiest Girl In The Whole USA' was no. 1 in country chart, won a Grammy for Song of the Year, CMA Single of the Year, ACM Song, Album, Female Vocalist of the Year. Further hits incl. 'Funny Face' '72, 'Superman', 'You Were Always There' and 'Little Girl Gone' '73, 'You Can't Be A Beacon (If Your Light Don't Shine)' '74, 'It Do Feel Good' '75, 'Don't Be Angry' '76. Changed labels to Warner and had hits 'That Was Yesterday' '77, 'Do I Love You (Yes In Every Way)' '78, 'Somebody Special' '79. Stricken with multiple sclerosis '79, but has fought against it and carried on. Brotherly Love '81 is a gospel album on MCA Songbird; she changed labels to RCA '82, Columbia '83, Cleveland International '84, Mercury '86, with a continuous run of hit country singles through to '91.
