FADO

Portuguese song form, deeply melancholic, often poetic lyrics accompanied by Portuguese guitar, viola and guitarra (twelve or ten-string guitars). Fado (from the Latin 'fatum' meaning fate/ tragedy) was traditionally heard in Lisbon's cellars, the first great exponent Maria Severa; Amalia Rodrígues (see her entry) and Carlos do Carmo have brought it to a wider audience. Other important 'fadistas' incl. Lucilia do Carmo Herminia and Maria Tereza de Noronha. Compilations include Fado de Lisboa on Heritage UK and Un Parfum de Fado (ten volumes on Playasound, France). There are probably musical links with Cape Verdean morna (see Cesario Evora) via the trade routes with Brazil and Angola. The Story Of Fado on EMI Hemispheres is a good intro by various artists.
