(b Jack Henry Greene, 7 Jan. '30, Maryville TN) Country singer. The Green Giant worked in construction etc and sang in local clubs at weekends; on radio in Knoxville, Atlanta, with Cecil Griffith & the Young "Uns '48-9, Rhythm Ranch Boys '50, Peach Tree Cowboys '51, Harold Lee & the River Ranch Boys '52-5. Joined Ernest Tubb band on drums '62, signed to Decca '65 and had long string of hits incl. five country no. ones '66-9: "There Goes My Everything', "All The Time', "You Are My Treasure', "Until My Dreams Come True', "Statue Of A Fool'. CMA Male Vocalist, Album, Single and Song of the Year '67 for "There Goes My Everything'. Duets with Jeanne Seely incl. no. 2 hit "Wish I Didn't Have To Miss You' '69, LP of same name, also Two For The Show. Toured extensively, visited Wembley '73, 76. Left Decca/MCA '75 when hits slowed down, remained popular touring act, came back on 2-disc set Live At The Grand Ole Opry, single "The Rock I'm Leaning On' '80 on Frontline label; later on EMH Records '83- 4.
