HOLMES, Richard 'Groove'

(b Richard Arnold Holmes, 2 May '31, Camden NJ; d 29 June '91, St Louis MO) Organist. Left-handed, also played bass, had the strongest bass lines of any jazz organist. Single 'Misty' (Erroll Garner song) almost reached top 40 '66 on Prestige; three LPs on that label made the Billboard pop LP chart '66: Soul Message (incl. 'Misty'), Living Soul (live at Count Basie's club in Harlem) and Misty. He was discovered by Les McCann; his first records '61 (on Pacific Jazz) featured McCann and Ben Webster; Groovin' With Jug on that label featured Gene Ammons. Among many LPs on Prestige '66--8 was That Healin' Feelin' with Rusty Bryant on tenor (b 25 Nov. '29, Huntington WV; d 25 March '91; Bryant had a juke-box hit early '50s on Dot with honking rock'n'roll style 'Night Train', made a comeback in the '60s on Prestige). Holmes also recorded '68--76 on Groove Merchant, Flying Dutchman, World Pacific; a Blue Note LP was called Comin' On Home '74; latest albums were on Muse: Shippin' Out '77 with Dave Schnitter on tenor (b 19 March '48, Newark NJ), Good Vibrations '77 and Broadway '80, both with Houston Person on tenor (b 10 Nov. '34, Florence SC).
