HUBBARD, Ray Wylie

(b 13 Nov. '43, Soper OK) Texas outlaw, country-rock, folksinging songwriter and band leader who remains a cult hero. Grew up in Dallas suburbs; teamed with Michael Martin Murphy to form folk group at high school. Later came the Coachman, and his own club, the Outpost at Red River, New Mexico; then Texas Fever and Ray Wylie Hubbard and the Cowboy Twinkies. Developing as a songwriter, Jerry Jeff Walker cut his 'Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother' '73. Demo tape resulted in record deal with Reprise and Nashville-produced album Ray Wylie Hubbard And The Twinkie Cowboys '76; joined Willie Nelson's Lone Star Records and cut Off The Wall '78, continued touring '80s with various country-rock musicians and cutting small independent label singles and albums. Often does charity work, but hasn't been able to find more than cult status among country-rock and outlaw fans. Other albums incl.
