HEYWARD, Nick

(b 20 May '61, London) UK pop person, moving force behind Haircut 100, who appealed during early '80s infantile pop era. Single hits incl. "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)' (no. 4 '81), "Love Plus One', "Fantastic Day'; concerts were hysterical, similar to those of Bay City Rollers. Haircut's only LP with Heyward Pelican West '82 incl. all hit tracks, all written by him. He left '82; group carried on with new deal, LP Paint On Paint '83, then split (drummer Blair Cunningham joined Pretenders '86). Heyward made confident, diverting solo LP North Of A Miracle '83, relying on session people (Tim Renwick, Dave Mattacks) instead of contemporaries, incl. "The Day It Rained Forever', "Whistle Down The Wind', blue-eyed soul "Take That Situation'; belated follow-up Postcards From Home '86 was less substantial. Supported Wham! at their final show '86, joined onstage by Haircut alumni.
