HOWELL, Peg Leg

(b 5 March 1888, Eatonton GA; d 11 Aug. '66, Atlanta) Blues singer, guitarist. Raised on a farm; self-taught on guitar cage 20; worked as a farmer but lost a leg due to gunshot wound '16. Worked streets and parks for tips with a group '23-34, subsequently mostly outside music. Served time for bootlegging '25; lost the other leg due to diabetes '52. One of the first blues singers to record, for Columbia '26-9; then for Testament '63.
