HYLTON, Jack

(b 2 July 1892, Lancashire, England; d 29 Jan. '65) Piano, bandleader. Began as cinema organist; led small "jazz' group in the Queen's Hall Roof Ballroom; then led a top UK dance band late '20s and '30s, with sidemen such as Ted Heath ('25). Played in Paris and Berlin late '20s. Often played hot; hired Coleman Hawkins '34-5, '39; went to the USA himself and led a band there '35-6. Having played in many a show he later became a successful theatrical producer.
