(b 20 Sep. '56, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) Saxophones. Classically trained in London and Paris, won Amcon Award 1984, gave solo recital in Carnegie Hall. Commutes between jazz and classical worlds, plays Proms, composes film music (Prick Up Your Ears '88), gives TV master classes, has recorded works specially written for him by composers from Richard Rodney Bennett through Luciano Berio to Michael Berkeley. Most successful jazz-based work is The Shadow Of The Duke '92 on EMI, a tribute to Duke Ellington. Another album Habanera is on Hannibal.
