HARRISON, Donald

(b 23 June '60, New Orleans LA) Alto sax. Joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers March '82: LPs with Blakey Oh, By The Way '82 on Timeless, New York Scene '84 on Concord Jazz (incl. own tune, straight-ahead delight 'Controversy'). Co-led group with Terence Blanchard on LPs New York Second Line '84, Discernment '86, both also on Concord; Nascence, Crystal Stair and Black Pearl '86--8 on Columbia; they also re-created Eric Dolphy at the Five Spot sessions with the original rhythm section, on Evidence CD. Harrison also played in Don Pullen quintet '85 (Sixth Sense on Black Saint). Full Circle was on Sweet Basil; on Candid, quintet For Art's Sake '90 was made at Birdland, and Indian Blues '91 celebrated the New Orleans heritage of his family, a fun album with the Guardians of the Flame incl. Big Chief Donald Harrison Sr on lead vocals, guest Dr John etc: both had Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Carl Allen on drums. Harrison was highly praised '94 accompanying Lena Horne at Carnegie Hall; The Power Of Cool '94 on Castle/Essential Jazz was uneven, perhaps an attempt at crossover, but his work on Roy Haynes's Te Vou same year was a rewarding session. Nouveau Swing '97 saw him signed to Impulse.
