HAYNES, Roy

(b 13 March '26, Roxbury MA) Drummer, one of the most versatile and tasteful in modern jazz. Gigged and recorded with practically everybody, from Lester Young and Thelonious Monk to Gary Burton, Larry Coryell, Chick Corea; worked with Sarah Vaughan '53--8; led own groups; worked a lot with Stan Getz '50s, again '65; led own Hip Ensemble from '70. Own LPs began in Stockholm and Paris '54 with Joe Benjamin on bass; then We Three '58 on New Jazz (Prestige) with Phineas Newborn and Paul Chambers, Just Us '60 with a different trio; then quartet LPs Out Of The Afternoon '62 on Impulse with Roland Kirk and Tommy Flanagan, Cracklin' with Booker Ervin and Cymbaliam, both '63 on New Jazz, People '64 on Pacific Jazz. Septet incl. George Adams, Marvin Peterson on trumpet: Hip Ensemble '71, Senyah '73 on Mainstream (also a track on compilation Booty). Others incl. quartet Togyu '73 on RCA/Japan; Jazz a Confronto 29 '75 on Horo; various groups recorded at Berkeley Thank You, Thank You and Vistalite '77--8 on Galaxy; quartet Live At The Riverbop, Paris '79 on French Blue Marge label; quartet True Or False '86 on Free Lance made live in Paris with Ralph Moore. Carried on in the CD era with Homecoming '92 on Evidence, When It's Haynes It Roars '93 and Te Vou! '95 on Dreyfus (the latter incl. Christian McBride, Pat Metheny, Donald Harrison and David Kikoski), My Shining Hour '94 on Storyville with Thomas Clausen's Jazzparticipants, live in Denmark: Haynes won the Danish JazzPar award that year.
