HEAD, Roy

(b 9 Jan. '41, Three Rivers TX) Rock'n'roll-based country singer. Began early '60s as pop singer with own band the Traits. Signed with Sceptor '64, then smaller label Back Beat: R&B-flavoured 'Treat Her Right' made top three on US pop chart '65. Earlier records reissued; 'Just A Little Bit', 'Apple Of My Eye' made top 40 '65, three more minor hits '66, all on two different labels. Made Hot 100 once more '71 with '(The World's Going Up In A) Puff Of Smoke' '71, then stuck with country market. Minor hit with Mickey Newbury's 'Baby's Not Home' '74 on Mega, changed to Shannon for biggest country hit 'The Most Wanted Woman In Town', top 20 '75. Signed to ABC-Dot for 'The Door I Used To Close', 'Come To Me' '76--7; has since recorded for Elektra, several smaller labels. LPs incl. Head First '76, Ahead Of His Time '77, Tonight's The Night '78, all on ABC-Dot; In Our Room '79, The Many Sides Of '80 on Elektra. Always has many fans, but fell between stools: rock-based style did not always appeal to country charts. 'Treat Her Right' was revived in film The Commitments '91.
