INMATES, The

UK rock quintet whose R&B sound was highly regarded but out of its time: Peter Gunn, guitar and vocals; Bill Hurley, vocals; Ben Donnelly, bass; Tony Oliver, guitar; Jim Russell, drums and vocals. They came from same pub-rock genre as Dr Feelgood; if they had been a few years earlier they might have done better: album First Offence '79 on Radar incl. singles "Dirty Water' (remake of Standells' '66 hit made Hot 100 in USA, though words were altered for London) and "The Walk' (their only UK chart entry, in top 40); the LP made top 50 in USA on Polydor. Shot In The Dark and Heatwave In Alaska did less well despite some prod. from Stuart Coleman; Five '84 issued on Lolita.
