JACKSON, Carl

(b 18 Sept. '53, Louisville MS) Singer, songwriter and multi- instrumentalist, something of a child prodigy mastering banjo and guitar as a youngster. Discovered in his father's bluegrass band by Jim & Jesse; joined their band the Virginia Boys '67-72; rec. debut album Bluegrass Festival '69 for Prize Records. Formed his own band Country Store '72 with friends incl. Keith Whitley, Jimmy Guadreau; joined Glen Campbell's road show '73-'84. Signed to Capitol Records with acclaimed albums Banjo Player '74 and Old Friend '78; moved to Sugar Hill label, worked with Emmylou Harris, Marty Stuart, Ricky Skaggs, etc. Concentrated on solo career and landed contract with Columbia '84 with several minor hits. Continues as highly successful session player, songwriter with hits for Vince Gill, Pam Tillis, Diamond Rio etc. Won International Bluegrass Association Song Of the Year for "Little Mountain Church Home' '91, earned Grammy for Spring Training '91, album on Sugar Hill and Dove Award for Song Of the Year for "Where Shadows Never Fall' '92. Other albums incl. Banjo Man (A Tribute To Earl Scruggs) '81, Song Of the South '82 on Sugar Hill.
