JONES, Anthony Armstrong

(b Ronnie Jones, 2 June 1949, Ada OK, d 18 June 1996, Shreveport LA) Pop-country singer of late '60s and early '70s, stage name from the then husband of Princess Margaret. The one-time professional golfer was discovered by Conway Twitty; toured with Twitty's show '63-6; signed to Chart Records '68 and broght pop covers to the country chart: 'Proud Mary' '69, 'Take A Letter Maria' '70, 'Bad, Bad Leroy Brown' '73. Moved to Epic Records, then faded from charts, but continued to tour regularly; resurfaced on AIR label '86; ran his own honky-tonk club Proud Mary in Shreveport from '92. His sister Beverly Jones Johnson (as Beverly Eagle) was a vocalist in Vince Gill's first band, Mountain Smoke.
