APPICE, Carmine

(b 15 Dec. '46, Staten Island NY) Veteran rock drummer. With seven years' experience, three of formal training, joined East Coast group the Pigeons late '66; group renamed Vanilla Fudge almost single-handedly defined heavy metal genre with sound based on Appice's bedrock style, LPs on Atlantic. Formed Cactus with bassist Tim Bogert and ex-Amboy Dukes Rusty Day '70, then 'supergroup' Beck, Bogert and Appice '72 ('69 plans had been thwarted by Beck's car crash). This group split '74; Appice joined even shorter-lived KGB (Ray Kennedy, Mike Bloomfield, Rick Grech) '76 for two LPs, then joined Rod Stewart (another ex-Beck sideman) '77. Co-wrote '78 transatlantic no. 1 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy' with Stewart, but wrangle with Brazilian singer Jorge Ben over tune marred success; royalties donated to UNICEF. Solo LP Carmine Appice '81, with Stewart band members Danny Johnson, guitar; Jay Davis, bass; Duane Hutchings, keyboards (this had also been the final Cactus lineup). By '84 replaced in Stewart's group by Tony Brock (ex-Babys). Short stint backing Ozzy Osbourne ended acrimoniously with ego clash. With wide experience of styles, having played with Stanley Clarke, Bo Diddley, Ted Nugent etc formed new band King Kobra '85, LP Ready To Strike. Younger brother Vinnie also drums; sometime member of Black Sabbath.
