To NYC; with Illinois Jacquet, Cannonball Adderley, many others; Dizzy Gillespie '58--9, Thelonious Monk '59; Adderley's famous and popular quintet '59--65; Oscar Peterson Trio '66--9. With Cedar Walton '71; many LPs with Adderley, Peterson, Walton, Clifford Jordan, Sonny Stitt, Red Garland, Lucky Thompson, others. Powerful, big-toned player on both instruments. Own LPs on Riverside: The Soul Society '60 (by 'Sam Jones' Soul Society') with Bobby Timmons, Nat Adderley featured Jones on cello on half the tracks, with Keeter Betts on bass (b William Thomas Betts, 22 July '28, NYC); The Chant '61 ('Sam Jones Plus 10') was similar but with both Adderleys; Down Home '62 had Ron Carter on bass. Seven Minds '74 with Walton, Billy Higgins, string quartet on Japanese East Wind was followed by quintet Cello Again '76 with Higgins, sextet Changes And Things '77 (with Louis Hayes on drums: b 31 May '37, Detroit) on Xanadu. Sextet Something In Common '77 on Muse had Walton and Higgins; quintet Visitation '78 on Steeplechase was recorded in Copenhagen; The Bassist!
