(b 14 Sep. '42, Marianna AR) Saxophones, flute, also synthesizer; mainly alto sax. Grew up in St Louis; founder member of BAG (Black Artists Group). Member of World Saxophone Quartet, led own Jump Up funk-reggae combo on Oliver Lake And Jump Up and Plug It on Gramavision, then Dancevision '86 on Blue Heron; also his own uncompromising post-Dolphy jazz albums: Heavy Spirits on Arista; Holding Together, Prophet, Clevont Fitzhubert and Expandable Language '84 on Black Saint; Gallery '87 on Gramavision, with Fred Hopkins, Geri Allen, drummer Pheeroan akLaff, trumpeter Rasul Sidik on one track. Virtual Reality was on Gazell with akLaff and others; Dedicated To Dolphy '94 on Black Saint.
