LUFT, Lorna

(b 21 Nov. '52, LA) Cabaret singer who has also appeared on Broadway and in films. The daughter of Judy Garland and Sid Luft, she listens to everything from heavy metal to Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin. She appeared on Broadway in Promises, Promises and in the original cast of Snoopy '84 (music by Hal Hackaday), as well as in touring versions of Guys And Dolls, They're Playing Our Song and Grease; films incl. Grease 2 '82 and My Giant '97 (with Billy Crystal). She is an all-round entertainer who loves performing and gets good reviews wherever she goes, but has made few recordings. 'Where The Boys Are'/'Prove Me Wrong' was a single on Epic '84. The Gershwin show Girl Crazy '30 was filmed '43 starring Lorna's mother; a recording of the score on Elektra/Nonesuch '84 from Gershwin's original manuscripts was cond. by John Mauceri and starred Lorna as well as vocalists David Carroll and Judy Blazer. She contributed the title track to The Christmas Album ... A Gift Of Hope '91 on Children's Records (benefiting children's hospitals, 25 tracks with 25 artists incl. Frank Sinatra). Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas '96 was on the UK Carlton label. Her memoir Me And My Shadow '98 rescued her mother and half-sister Liza Minnelli from their iconic status.
