(b Laura Lee Rundless, 9 March 45, Chicago) Soul and gospel vocalist. Family moved to Detroit mid-'50s; Lee joined The Meditation Singers and worked on Amen LP for Jubilee label, others for Hob and Gospel. Began soul career '66; first hit single "Dirty Man' on Chess, entering Hot 100 chart late '67. Two more minor hits; switched to Cotillion, then to Dozier-Holland-Dozier label Hot Wax: "Women's Love Rights', title cut of '71 LP, reached no. 36, followed in '72 by "Since I Fell For You', "Rip Off', "If You Can Beat Me Rockin''. Recorded for Invictus '73-5, Ariola '76, Fantasy '79, sales fell away; she resumed gospel career in '83 with Rev. Al Green on Myrhh. A fine soul singer with appeal to early '70s women's lib movement.
