LOVICH, Lene

(b Lili Marlene Premilovich, 30 March '49, Detroit) Singer and actress. Moved to England at age 13; she screamed on horror-movie soundtracks and was one of the first signings to the important UK indie Stiff, her bizarre Gypsie-ish appearance and unique warbling vocal style making a lasting impact. She cultivated an air of mystery, reflected in the title of her first album Stateless '79, which incl. "Lucky Number', a huge hit in Europe (no. 3 UK). The other albums were Flex '80 and No-Man's-Land '83; they all charted in the USA too. Her career petered out with Stiff; she was an infl. on Cyndi Lauper and Hazel O'Connor.
