'61, NYC) Trumpet; one of the most promising young players on the instrument, moving beyond the powerful infl. of Clifford Brown etc and becoming a new voice when he died of uraemia. Toured with Max Roach '58, played on Roach LPs Max Roach Plus Four and a live album from Newport Jazz Festival both on EmArcy, Deeds, Not Words on Riverside and Sessions, Live on Calliope, compilation Conversations on Milestone, all '58; The Many Sides Of Max Roach on Trip/Mercury and Award-Winning Drummer on Bainbridge '59; Freedom Now Suite '60 on Candid, Percussion Bitter Sweet '61 on Impulse. Appeared with Mal Waldron, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy '59--61, notably on Dolphy's Live At The Five Spot and Far Cry on Prestige.
