LITTLE, Booker

(b 2 April '38, Memphis TN; d 5 Oct. '61, NYC) Trumpet; one of the most promising young players on the instrument, moving beyond the powerful infl. of Clifford Brown etc and becoming a new voice when he died of uraemia. Toured with Max Roach '58, played on Roach LPs Max Roach Plus Four and a live album from Newport Jazz Festival both on EmArcy, Deeds, Not Words on Riverside and Sessions, Live on Calliope, compilation Conversations on Milestone, all '58; The Many Sides Of Max Roach on Trip/Mercury and Award-Winning Drummer on Bainbridge '59; Freedom Now Suite '60 on Candid, Percussion Bitter Sweet '61 on Impulse. Appeared with Mal Waldron, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy '59--61, notably on Dolphy's Live At The Five Spot and Far Cry on Prestige. Own LPs: on UA '58 (later on Blue Note) with Roach, George Coleman, Tommy Flanagan, Art Davis on bass; quartet LP '60 on Time/Island/ Bainbridge with Scott La Faro; sextet on Candid '61 with Roach and Dolphy; Victory And Sorrow '61 on Bethlehem (aka Booker Little And Friend).
