MAAL, Baaba

(b '53, Sodor, Senegal) Singer- songwriter. A Toucouleur from the Fula region of Fouta, he soon came under the infl. of the Wolof trad. of Dakar, esp. Youssou N'Dour. A strong trad. infl. remains alongside the effects of frequent sojourns in Paris. Much work with childhood friend Mansour Seck, both in group Dande Lenol. Acoustic albums Djam Leeli and Baayo followed by more eclectic Firin' In Fouta '94, all on Mango; TV profile on UK's South Bank Show '96 showed Maal both on his home ground and emerging to an international audience.
