MANGWANA, Sam

(b '45, Kinshasa, Zaire) African singer-composer, bandleader. Began at 18 with Rochereau's African Fiesta as singer and arranger; stayed with them for many years, occasionally also performing with Los Batitchas, the Negro Band, L'Orchestra Tembo, others; invited '72 to join the other giant of Zairean music, Franco and the TPOK Jazz, staying three years. By now well-known and acquainted with the cream of the country's musicians, he went solo '76, formed the African All Stars, toured widely '76--82 visiting almost every country in Africa as well as the West Indies and Europe, establishing a truly pan-African popularity with relaxed and lilting style reflected on Georgette Eckins and Matinda on Disques Sonics. Formed own label Sam '79; continued to lease records to other companies such as Star Musique and Celluloid, e.g. albums Arraire Disco, Est Ce Que Tu Moyens, Affaire Video, N'Simba Eli, Les Champions. A milestone came with big hit 'Maria Tebbo' '82 on album of that name (later on CD from Stern's); also made Cooperation that year with Franco. Album Canta Mocambique '84 and hit single 'Furaha Ya Bibi' '85 were further successes. Now based in Paris; Rumba Music on Celluloid/Melodic or Stern's Africa incl. NYC salseros; Maria Tebbo/Waka Waka was also on Stern's; Aladji on Shanachie.
