MENDES, Sergio

(b 11 Feb. '41, Niteroi, Brazil) Piano, composer. Early participant in bossa nova movement, touring South America, settling in USA mid-'60s. An Atlantic LP '63 was arr. by Antonio Carlos Jobim; The Swinger From Rio '64 incl. Jobim and Art Farmer; he formed group Brazil '65 (then Brazil '66, etc), toured and recorded with it on Atlantic '65, A&M thereafter (Fool On The Hill '66, etc). Vintage '74 on Bell incl. Jobim; The New Brazil '77 on Elektra (Brasileiro now on that label), Alegria '80 on WEA, Sergio Mendes '83 and Confetti '84 carried on tropical-flavoured easy listening albums. Compilations on Curb/MCA and A&M; then Oceano '96 on Verve, with guests Gilberto Gil and Hermeto Pascoal.
