(b Loretta Lynn Morgan, 27 June '60, Nashville TN) Country singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, actress. Daughter of singer George Morgan made first professional appearance at 13 on Grand Ole Opry; worked as receptionist and demo singer for Acuff-Rose and signed to Hickory '78 with minor country hits; moved to MCA '79 without too much success; opening act for George Jones '81--3; featured in Opryland's Country Bluegrass Show and regular on TNN's Nashville Now; joined Opry '84; married singer Keith Whitley '86; signed to RCA '87 and made country top 20 with 'Trainwreck Of Emotion'. Her career was building well when Whitley died of alcoholism '89; she overcame that to become one of most successful female country singers of her era. First no. 1 with 'Five Minutes' '90; duet with Whitley on 'Till A Tear Becomes A Rose' '90 won CMA Vocal Event award; albums Leave The Light On and Something In Red were both hits and she moved over to RCA's sister label BNA '92; further no. ones with 'What Part Of No', 'I Didn't Know My Own Strength'; married singer Jon Randall '96.
