(b 13 October 1934, Athens, Greece) Pop singer with 'the voice of longing'. First recorded '59 and became a hit in Greece, went to Germany to record, had million- selling Continental hit with 'Weisse Rosen Aus Athen' '62 ('The White Rose Of Athens'), written/arranged by Manos Hadjidakis for film Traumland der Sehnsucht ('Dreamland Of Desire'), based on a Greek tune aka 'The Water And The Wine'. (Hadjidakis d 15 June 1994, Athens; he also wrote 'Never On Sunday'.) She represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest '63; had eight hit LPs in the UK '69-76, appeared on An Evening With Harry Belafonte/Mouskouri '66 and remained a popular MOR artist. Nana '84 on Philips included songs by Neil Sedaka and Allen Toussaint. After a bewildering number of albums in various countries, the double Classical '85 was one of the most successful; Falling In Love Again: Great Songs From The Movies included Belafonte, Michel Legrand; there were 20 albums in France on Polygram labels and five in Greece on GVRT (mostly cassettes) listed in the international section of the '97 Schwann catalogue. She was elected to the European Parliament in Brussels '94.
