MSELEKU, Bheki

(b 3 March '55, Durban, South Africa) Piano, tenor saxophone, composer. Like many South African musicians, a regular and valued contributor to the London jazz scene since mid-'80s. His intensely spiritual music mixes influences such as McCoy Tyner's with those of fellow countryman Abdullah Ibrahim, an amalgam well represented by his debut album Celebration '91 on World Circuit, Meditations '92 on Verve (released late '94), Timelessness '93 on Verve (with classy guests such as Marvin Smith, Joe Henderson and Elvin Jones), and Beauty Of Sunrise (with Graham Haynes and Ravi Coltrane).
