(b 20 June '46, Springhill, Nova Scotia) Singer; international success in country and pop. Born and raised in small coal-mining community; studied at U of New Brunswick, taught physical education at Prince Edward Island, auditioned for Halifax TV show Sing Along Jubilee but appeared on Let's Go, prod. by William Langstroth, mus. dir. Brian Ahern: the show was a success; guided by Ahern she signed with Apex, made LP What About Me '68, turned full-time pro, signed with Capitol for This Is My Way '69 incl. 'Snowbird': single was top ten country and pop USA, top ten UK, etc. She was a regular on Glenn Campbell TV show; they made duet LP '71 and toured together. Twenty-five solo Hot 100 entries '70--82 incl. 'Danny's Song' '73, 'You Won't See Me' '74 in top ten; topped country chart with remake of George Jones classic 'He Thinks I Still Care' '74; other country hits incl. 'Son Of A Rotten Gambler' '74, 'The Call' '76, etc. Married Langstroth '75 and settled down to raise a family, but returned '78 with producer Jim Ed Norman on LP Let's Keep It That Way, topped both pop and country charts with 'You Needed Me' '79 (one of several Grammy awards, also ACM's Song of the Year); further country no. 1 hits same year with 'I Just Fall In Love Again', 'Shadows In The Moonlight', 'Broken Hearted Me'. 'Nobody Loves Me Like You Do' was hit duet with Kenny Loggins '85. Among many LPs: Talk It Over In The Morning '71, Danny's Song '73, Highly Prized Possession '74, Keeping In Touch '76, New Kind Of Feeling '79, A Country Collection '80, The Hottest Night Of The Year '82, Heart Over Mind '84. As with so many veterans, her records disappeared from country radio late '80s; album sales were still big, with Something To Talk About '86, Harmony '87, Christmas '88 all going gold; she switched to EMI Canada/SBK and Croonin' '93 was a collection of mainly pop standards. Her Greatest Hits And Finest Performances '92 was a boxed set on Capitol; Now And Forever a three-CD set on SBK. Anne Murray '96 had guests Bryan Adams and Aaron Neville.
