(b 31 Jan. '44, Kosciusko MS) Probably the best living white blues harmonica player. Choctaw Indian ancestry; father played mandolin; raised in Memphis TN; began on harmonica age 13. Worked outside music, moved to Chicago '62, sat in at black blues clubs; worked with J. B. Hutto, Mike Bloomfield/Barry Goldberg Blues Band; accompanied Big Joe Williams, John Lee Hooker on records; own LPs for Vanguard from '66 incl. Tennessee Woman, Stand Back! Here Comes Charlie Musselwhite, Stone Blues; more recently Goin' Back Down and Takin' My Time on Arhoolie; The Harmonica According To Charlie Musselwhite on Blind Pig; Ace Of Harps, Signature and In My Time (with the Blind Boys of Alabama) on Alligator, others.
