MILLER, Jody

(b 29 Nov. '41, Phoenix AZ) The complete crossover country-pop singer. Father played country fiddle; four sisters all amateur vocalists; she led folk trio the Melodies in school, worked as secretary, moved to West Coast '63 to pursue singing; actor Dale Robertson introduced her to Capitol label and she began as folk singer with LP Wednesday's Child. Mary Taylor wrote "Queen Of The House' (sequel to Roger Miller hit "King Of The Road'); big pop and country hit '65 won Jody a Grammy for Best Female Country Performance. LPs The Nashville Sound Of Jody Miller and Sings The Hits Of Buck Owens didn't do so well; she retired to Oklahoma '68 to raise her daughter; lured back to music by an offer to record for Billy Sherrill on Epic in Nashville '70, immediately hit country top 10 with "Look At Mine', followed by "He's So Fine', "Baby I'm Yours', "Be My Baby', updates of '60s pop hits. Success with Sherrill continued for years but no attempt was made to change with the times; in early '80s she retired again to breed quarter horses in Blanchard.
