MITCHELL, Blue

(b Richard Allen Mitchell, 13 March '30, Miami FL; d 21 May '79 of cancer) R&B and jazz trumpeter. Worked with Earl Bostic, others early '50s, with Horace Silver '58-64, took it over as Blue Mitchell Quintet '64-9 with Chick Corea; worked with Ray Charles, John Mayall. Apart from prolific freelance work as a sideman, seven LPs as leader on Riverside/ Milestone '58-63 incl. Blue's Moods '60 (with Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, Roy Brooks on drums). Eight Blue Note LPs '63-9 incl. The Thing To Do and Down With It '64-5 with Corea; Heads Up!, Collision In Black and Bantu Village '67-9 featured larger groups. Five Mainstream LPs '71-4 were followed by big band Stratosonic Nuances and Booty '75-6 on RCA, African Violet and Summer Soft '77 on Impulse/MCA with various smaller lineups. Live '76 was a quintet made with the best local musicians in Half Moon Bay CA after he had been working with singers Lena Horn and Tony Bennett; he reached back to the flavour of the pre-bop years and a mellow time was had by all.
