MOODY, Clyde

(b 19 Sep. '15, Cherokee NC; d 7 April '89) Country singer, guitarist and songwriter known as The Woodchopper and later as The Hillbilly Waltz King. He began as a member of the Happy-Go-Lucky Boys '38-40 with Lester Flatt. Then with Mainer's Mountaineers, then Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys as guitarist and lead singer (most notable number: "Six White Horses'), also singing duets with Monroe. One of the first to be signed as a songwriter with new Acuff-Rose publishing company in Nashville '44. Formed own band the Woodchoppers, signed with King '46, scored hits like "Shenandoah Waltz', "Carolina Waltz', "Cherokee Waltz' and "Waltz Of The Wind'. Moved to Wash. DC late '40s to appear in new TV show, then to Durham NC for long-running series; joined New Dominion Barn Dance in Richmond VA late '50s; appeared at bluegrass festivals and toured with Ramblin' Tommy Scott's show.
