McGRAW, Tim

(b 1 May 1967, Delhi LA) Country singer of Irish and Italian ancestry; his parents divorced when he was an infant and he didn't know that his father was legendary baseball pitcher Tug McGraw until he was a teenager. He attended Northeast Louisiana U. on sports scholarships and intended to study law; worked in a plant nursery and as a rodeo competitor, became serious about music and moved to Nashville '89, playing clubs and working as demo singer. Signed to Curb '90, made chart debut '92, had minor hits '92-4. He landed an opening spot on Joe Diffie's Honky Tonk Attitude tour '93; his big break came with 'Indian Outlaw', a dance-oriented novelty that crossed over to pop '94, but the song aggrieved Native Americans and McGraw did benefit concerts for that community. Second album Not A Moment Too Soon '94 hit top of pop and country charts and eventally sold over five million copies. Further country chart success included top ten singles 'Don't Take The Girl', 'Down On The Farm' '94, 'I Like It, I Love It' '95, 'She Never Lets It Go To Her Heart '96; married singer Faith Hill '96. Albums include Tim McGraw '93, All I Want '95 on Curb.
