(b 4 July '37, Lynchburg VA) Veteran country singer, regularly scored in charts '60s. Joined US Navy, earned high school diploma '58; attended Lynchburg College, sang lead in college rock'n'roll band. Worked on local club circuit and was runner-up in Pet Milk contest on WSM '61; quit job with trucking firm and moved to Nashville, initially working as songwriter; signed with Capitol '64 and reached charts with "Take Your Hands Off My Heart' '65, "Thank You Ma'am' and "Volkswagon' '66, "I Just Want To Be Alone' and "Gone With The Wine' '67; teamed with Jean Shepard for top 10 duet "I'll Take The Dog' '66. Joined Grand Ole Opry '66, appeared as regular on BBC TV's Swinging Country '66-8. Recorded for other labels incl. Plantation, Dot, Mega, Hilltop, MCA '79-81.
