PROPHET, Ronnie

(b 26 Dec. '37, Calumet, Quebec, Canada) Singer, comedian, guitarist who made his name in Nashville late '60s, became international star with Wembley debut '78. Played local square dances in teens, moved to Toronto early '60s, gained reputation as guitarist: a natural comic, incorporated sketches and impersonations into club act. To Nashville '69, gaining residency at Carousel Club, venue soon remaned Ronnie Prophet's Carousel Club. Very much a visual act, never made much impression on record, though recording regularly from mid-'60s; made USA country chart with "Sanctuary' '75, lesser hits. Zany stage act made him a star, resulted in BBC TV series '79, top billing on national UK tours.
