PATINKIN, Mandy

(b Mandel Patinkin, 30 Nov. '47, Chicago) Actor, singer, drama teacher. Attended U of Kansas, Juilliard School of Drama; he has made many films in supporting roles (Ragtime '81, Daniel and Yentl '83, Dick Tracey '90 etc); his first loyalty is to the stage. He won a Tony for his first singing role, playing Che in the NYC prod. of Lloyd Webber's Evita '80; Stephen Sondheim wrote the title role of Sunday In The Park With George '84 for him; he did one-man show Mandy Patinkin on Broadway: Dress Casually '89 and AIDS piece Falsettos '92, recorded Guys And Dolls for BBC Radio 2. He starred in TV series Chicago Hope about a hospital. Albums incl. Mandy Patinkin and Dress Casual '89--90 on Columbia, Experiment '94 (compiling songs from the theatre) and Oscar And Steve '95 (songs by Hammerstein II and Sondheim), both on Nonesuch.
