ROMBERG, Sigmund

(b 29 July 1887, Hungary; d 9 Nov. '51, NYC) Composer of about 50 Broadway shows in operetta style, packed with songs and nearly all hit shows; many of the songs have survived on their sheer charm despite the style being out of fashion. Best-known shows incl. Maytime '17 (filmed '37), Blossom Time '21, The Student Prince '24 (filmed '54 with Mario Lanza), The Desert Song '26 (filmed '29, '44, '53), The New Moon '28 (filmed '31, '40), May Wine '35, Up In Central Park '45 (filmed '48). The Girl In Pink Tights '54 was staged after his death. He was a founder member of ASCAP; conducted orchestra on radio and on tour, recording for Victor. Biography Deep In My Heart by Elliot Arnold; biopic of same name '54 starred Jos‚ Ferrer. Collaborating lyricists incl. Otto Harbach, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Gus Kahn, many others; best songs incl. 'When Hearts Are Young', 'Deep In My Heart, Dear', 'Golden Days', 'Lover, Come Back To Me', 'Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise', 'When I Grow Too Old To Dream', 'Close As Pages In A Book', many others.
